New Arctic benthic foraminiferal species

Marit-Solveig Seidenkrantz and Karen Luise Knudsen have together with Anne E. Jennings from INSTAAR, USA, found and described a new benthic foraminiferal species. This species was found in the Nares Strait, northern Baffin Bay and on the shelf of NE Greenland. It seems to be indicative of a nearby marine-terminating glacier, which will make it…

[Translate to English:] Modelled P-PINI burial ages for the six Deckenschotter sites in the Swiss Alpine Foreland (Gaussian probability distributions) after application of Bayesian inference modelling, using the morphostratigraphic constraint that the TDS site (Iberig) postdates the HDS sites. The thick black line overlying the coloured probability distributions shows the combined probability distribution for the five HDS sites (Tromsberg, Feusi, Siglistorf, Irchel Steig, and Irchel Hütz). The thin black line denotes the marine benthic 18O record, whereas the black/white bar at the bottom shows the palaeomagnetic polarity timescale. MPT denotes the Mid-Pleistocene Transition between 1.25 and 0.70 Ma, while the numbers 2, 6, 12, 16, 20, 22, and 24 denote marine isotope stages associated with prominent glacial periods.

New model helps solve an old problem - dating the first appearance of large glaciers in the Alps

Mads Faurschou Knudsen, Jesper Nørgaard, David Lundbek Egholm, Thomas Mejer Hansen, and international colleagues have just published a new paper in Earth and Planetary Science Letters entitled New cosmogenic nuclide burial-dating model indicates onset of major glaciations in the Alps during Middle Pleistocene Transition
