Mechanical experiments on deformation of unconsolidated (soft) sediments. Simulation of sediment deformation caused by glacier stress. This ring-shear apparatus enables continuous deformation of sediments under conditions mimicking the interface between a glacier and its soft bed (shear stress, normal stress, shearing velocity). Research focus is on the origin and evolution of structural and textural characteristics of sediments subjected to deformation along the bed of actively moving glaciers and ice sheets.
The apparatus is produced by WILLE GEOTECHNIK and computer-controlled by Siemens.
