ABSTRACT

Regarding energy demand in Europe and aspects like the "Energiewende" imply a particular role of the geosphere. Research is required regarding the energy use of the underground in general including potential interactions of the different utilisation options. The public debate enforces us to consider environmental issues in special. Special research is necessary in discovering, developing, and deploying geothermal technologies for recovering and/or seasonal storing of heat in the underground. Recent European activities from the EU framework programmes FP7 (e.g. GEISER) and horizon 2020 (e.g. DESTRESS) will be presented and discussed.
