ESP at 33rd Nordic Geological Winter Meeting

January 10-12, 2018

This year's Nordic Geological Winter Meeting was hosted at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Kongens Lyngby, Denmark, and was co-organized by the Geological Society of Denmark and DTU. The meeting aims to cover a wide range of geological topics and offers a venue for presenting research and networking with colleagues from the Nordic countries. In fact, the 3-day meeting covered no less than 17 topics with a total of 52 sessions of which included 377 oral presentations and 157 posters. More than 600 people attended the conference. People came to the conference from all over the world including – Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Iraq, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, UK og USA.

The ESP team had a very strong presence at the meeting this year. Thomas Ulrich and Thorsten Nagel served on the Scientific Program Committee in their respective fields, Economic Geology, and Metamorphic rocks and processes. Additionally, Christian Tegner, Eric Brown, Thomas Ulrich, and Thorsten Nagel co-convened several sessions:

  • UNDERSTANDING LARGE IGNEOUS PROVINCES AND ASSOCIATED RAPID ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES: FROM THE NORTH ATLANTIC IGNEOUS PROVINCE AND BEYOND (Tegner)
  • MAGMATIC PLUMBING SYSTEMS (Tegner)
  • GEODYNAMIC AND GEOLOGICAL EVOLUTION OF THE ARCTIC (Tegner)
  • GEOCHEMISTRY AND MODELING OF IGNEOUS SYSTEMS. (Tegner, Brown)
  • OPEN SESSION: ECONOMIC GEOLOGY (Ulrich)
  • MICRO-BEAM FRONTIERS IN MAGMATIC, METAMORPHIC, AND HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS THURSDAY JANUARY 11TH EARLY AND LATE AFTERN (Nagel)
  • DEFORMATION AND METAMORPHISM OF ROCKS: MICROSTRUCTURES, PROCESSES, AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES (Nagel)

The team also presented many talks and posters:

  • The pre-Caledonian Scandinavian Dyke Complex and 600 Ma plate reconstructions of Baltica. Tegner, C.
  • A hot, top-down model for the formation of the North Atlantic Igneous Province and the Iceland hot spot. Petersen, K. D
  • Markov Chain Monte Carlo Inversion of Mantle Temperature and Composition Beneath Iceland. Brown, E.
  • Fe and Si isotope systematics of the Thingmuli volcano, Iceland: the roles of crystal – melt fractionation, oxygen fugacity and melt structure. Stausberg, N.
  • Strontium isotopes in plagioclase record magma chamber dynamics of the Skaergaard intrusion. Hagen-Peter, G.
  • Promises and pitfalls of in situ Sr isotope ratio measurements by LA-MC-ICPMS By: Hagen-Peter, G.
  • Chronology of the Nebo Granite, Bushveld Complex. Skursch, O
  • Release of volatiles during North Atlantic flood basalt volcanism and correlation to the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Pedersen, J.M.
  • ’A large Devonian ultra-high-pressure province in northeastern Greenland’. Thorsten Nagel
  • ’Why the mantle transition zone does not appear to be thinned at plume sites’. Thorsten Nagel
