Randell Stephenson

Honorary professor

Randell Stephenson was in 2008 appointed honorary professor at the Department of Geoscience, where for several years he has been a frequent visitor, partly serving as external examiner to several PhD theses, partly having collaborated on several research proposals, projects, and publications. In 2005 he stayed at the department as a Visiting Fellow.

Randell Stephenson is by birth a Canadian and has geology/geophysics degrees from Carleton and Dalhousie. From 1989 to 2008 he worked in the Tectonics  and Structural Geology department of the VU University in Amsterdam.

His main field of research has been the tectonics of Phanerozoic sedimentary basins in south-eastern Europe but he has retained an interest in Arctic tectonics from his time at the Geological Survey of Canada (Calgary), where he spent five years before moving to Europe. Basin modelling based on integrating regional geophysical and geological observations has been a specialty. He carried out or participated in seismic surveys on the Canadian polar continental margin and Beaufort Sea-Mackenzie Delta areas in Canada and across the south-eastern Carpathians-Focsani Basin (Romania), the Dniepr-Donets Basin (Ukraine) and the Azov Sea-north-eastern Black Sea (Ukraine).

In January 2009 Randell Stephenson relocated to the University of Aberdeen (UK), where he now takes a position of professor in geophysics at the School of Geosciences.
