ABSTRACT

Late Quaternary zap-service: the (de-)glaciation history of the Shetland and Hebrides sectors of the British continental shelf, and the Disko/Umanak sector of the west Greenland continental shelf.

John F. Hiemstra, College of science, Department of Geography, Swansea University

This seminar will take the form of a ‘zap-service’ and cover the following aspects of recent research that I have been involved in:

  1. The last glaciation of the Shetland Isles - touching upon the questions whether the British Ice Sheet and the Scandinavian Ice Sheet were confluent in the northern North Sea and whether the island supported a local ice cap at some stage during the Late Quaternary;
  2. The last glaciation of St Kilda -  addressing the question about exact extent of the LGM British Ice Sheet in the Hebrides sector of the North Atlantic;
  3. The central West Greenland margin at and following the LGM – addressing the questions of nature of glacial dynamics in the Disko-Umanak area of the continental shelf, and the differences in deglaciation of the east and west Greenland continental shelf.
