Abstract

Fennoscandia is a geodynamically active region due to the relatively recent demise of the large ice sheets that covered this region at the last glacial maximum. The weight of the ice pressed the Earth’s crust down and now, in a process called glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), it is coming back to the previous level. The uplift can be observed on the coasts of the Baltic Sea as well as using geodetic measurements. I will show the current status of geodetic land uplift observations and geophysical modelling in the Fennoscandian area.

Dr. Maaria Noordman is an expert in geodesy and has been studying glacial isostatic adjustment from a modelling perspective. She will give a presentation that covers some of the fundamentals of her topic and all students are welcome.
