The Department of Geoscience delivers high‑quality research at the highest international level, and the broad research profile will remain a cornerstone of the Department’s strategy. Looking ahead, the Department will place increased emphasis on ensuring that our research generates clear societal benefits in the short and long term.
The research profile includes classical geoscience fields such as sedimentology, mineralogy/petrology, tectonics and structural geology, Quaternary geology, micropaleontology, geophysics, and geochemistry as well as various aspects of numerical geoscience and modelling.
The Department aims to consolidate its research around the three solid research themes: Water & Surface Processes, Climate & Environment, Energy & Earth Resources. The Department remains attentive to emerging opportunities and new scientific directions. Strengthening key research areas will enhance the international visibility and competitiveness of our research and increase our attractiveness as collaborators. This consolidation will be pursued by encouraging researchers to collaborate across disciplines to address larger, more complex research questions, as well as through targeted recruitment in the coming years. External funding is essential for expanding scientific and technical staff, enabling engagement with emerging research fields, and further strengthening established research groups. In this context, the Department also seeks to maintain its current high intake of PhD students alongside a strong and sustainable postdoctoral environment.
